Seat Leon 2000-05

The Seat Leon is a Golf-sized family vehicle. It was first introduced into the market in 2000 until 2005 and it has the appearance of a sporty car, which is possibly why it appealed to a wide range of consumers as well as it being value for money. If you are planning to buy a seat Leon or have recently purchased a Seat then perhaps you already have a Seat Used Car Warranty? The interior of the Leon is superb. It is functional, comfortable and has a clearly laid out dashboard; not surprising that - it's taken from the Audi A3. However, the back is a little of a squeeze, including headroom. The boot is more than adequate and can be made even bigger still by flipping the 60/40 split seat, although the rear sill is possibly a bit too high. Storage wise, there's a glovebox, a few shelves and a cubby in front of the gearlever. Cassette players are standard and only the Cupra models get a glove-box-mounted CD autochanger.

The driving position is good, but the seats are excellent; firm yet comfortable. They're particularly good on higher-spec models. The gearshift moves easily and the handling is very secure. The steering is light. Across the range, levels of standard equipment are good, with plenty of airbags with good crash test performance, plus reassuring security features. It also has ISOFIX child seat mountings and pre-tensioned front seatbelts.

ABS is also standard across the range, while SE and Cupra models have standard traction control. There's an alarm on all SE and Cupra models too, though all cars feature locking wheel bolts for the standard alloy wheels. And the use of Volkswagen locks means they shouldn't be easily-picked. The 1.4s get alloys, air conditioning, ABS, remote central locking, electric front windows. SE's have the climate control, traction control and electronic differential system which has only previously been seen on really posh cars.

The Seat Leon is also one of the quietest cars in its class. It is more fun to drive than a Golf, great on winding roads, good suspension albeit a tad hard. It is sharp, sporty and responsive. Fuel economy is as good as any of the others in this class; the TDIs offer a staggering 54mpg, and the 1.6-litre unit a surprising 40mpg combined figure. Emissions are generally low for company car drivers, and insurance ratings are reasonable; only the Cupra is high, at an eye watering Group 17. It is helpful to remember that the insurance group rating does not directly affect a car warranty price, it more for the car insurance premium, but higher performance does mean more costly repaires.

The overall performance from the wide range of petrol and turbodiesel engines is excellent, especially from the top sports models which have six-speed gearboxes.

For something even sportier, the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol is quick and quiet. The FSI is even more spirited, but the diesel engines are best if you're on a budget.

Diesel buyers will get to choose between a 103bhp 1.9-litre unit or a 138bhp 2.0-litre. The petrol models start with a 101bhp 1.6-litre & a 148bhp 2.0-litre direct injection FSI. Move up the Leon power chart and it makes it all worth while. First up is the 168bhp TDI diesel, those looking for a defined sporting drive will opt for the 200bhp FR model with its turbocharged 2.0-litre FSI engine or the 240bhp Cupra.

Whilst knowing that the Leon is a VW engine, it ensures that it is reliable & sturdy purchase. Parts prices can vary, depending on the item required.

The Seat Leon is an extremely competent vehicle. All of the attributes of a Golf but at a nicer price, often a far higher spec and it's also just a little faster on top speed too, not always, but some are.
