Currently renowned as a maker of one of the most popular private for hire taxi vehicles in the UK, Skoda is a successful automaker subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, with manufacturing plants throughout Europe. The story of this long-sustained company goes much deeper and is quite compelling.

Many older vehicles between three and five years are not likely to still be under their original warranty, so many dealers include mechanical breakdown insurance to increase their chance of selling that vehicle. Theses policies are generally very short and have major restrictions, so they may not always provide the level of cover that you really expect. Currently renowned as a maker of one of the most popular private for hire taxi vehicles in the UK, Skoda is a successful automaker subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, with manufacturing plants throughout Europe. The story of this long-sustained company goes much deeper and is quite compelling.

The earliest beginnings of the company trace all the way back to 1895, when a bicycle manufacturer emerged called Lauren and Klement. Soon after, in 1899, the company moved into motorcycles, and in 1905, it completed the early progression into automobile manufacturing.

After being involved in war production during World War I, the company merged with Skoda Works, in 1924, and the automobile legacy of the Skoda name officially began. Initially established in Austria-Hungary, and then in Czechoslovakia, Skoda was very successful with its car models in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s. The company's growth was put on hold during World War II, however, as it became a manufacturing arm under the authority of Germany.

During the early half of the 20th century, it was hard to distinguish the automaker arm of Skoda works from the other business and production activities the parent company engaged in. However, after WWII, Skoda, the automaker, became part of the planned post-war economy and was separated from the parent company.

Although faced with some politically challenging times, Skoda personified toughness and reliability of a quality car during the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the more popular cards produced by the company included: Skoda 440 Spartak, Octavia, Felicia, and Skoda 1000 MB. The company had become internationally recognised as a significant forced in the realm of automobile development.

Up until the end of the 1960s, Skoda has maintained a reputation for consistently modern car concepts that were comparable with competitive models developed throughout Europe, and even in western countries. However, the company faced some challenges as it moved forward from both political uncertainty, and a lack of forward moving design and production concepts. These challenges caused some gaps to develop between the company and other leading automakers in other parts of the world.

In spite of some solid car models during the 1970s and early 1980s, such as the Skoda 105/120, Estelle and Rapid, the Skoda name was recognized as somewhat outdated in design concepts heading into the pivotal 1980s. The decade of the 1980s would tremendously important to the modern development of the brand.
